Resources: Read the Directions, Even If You Don't Follow Them
The Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition has hunted down the exact text of most bicycle-related traffic laws, state by state, and presented them on their website, available for you to peruse from the comfort of your own home! Also available: bicycle laws in Canada (by province), Belgium, France, and the UK, and a variety of other resources for bicyclists online.
Wise up on your local bike law, folks! If the cops in your town are nice enough, you'll usually get off with a warning for whatever infraction you commit. In the off chance that some hothead decides to give you a hard time for riding your bike, though, it's good to know whether or not you're actually in the wrong.

I believe that while there are many reasons for the growth of individualism in the UK, the extreme libertarianism now beginning to take hold here begins on the road. When you drive, society becomes an obstacle. Pedestrians, bicycles, traffic calming, speed limits, the law: all become a nuisance to be wished away. The more you drive, the more bloody-minded and individualistic you become. The car is slowly turning us, like the Americans and the Australians, into a nation which recognises only the freedom to act, and not the freedom from the consequences of other people's actions.

It sounded like something you might agree with anyway :)
